Humans in Glorien

Several sentient races call the continent of Glorien home. Humans outnumber all of the other races by a considerable margin. Dwarves and elves are extremely long-lived but not very fertile. Until the arrival of the dragons, almost all dalibor lived in the hive city of Frandylshyn. Scholars at the Imperial College have made an attempt to estimate the number of dalibor based on the size of the city and its rate of growth. Those estimates range from a few tens of thousands to several hundred thousand. The zlobra have not been in Glorien long enough to make a difference demographically.

Humans are both fecund and driven to settle new lands. Thus, they dominate Glorien numerically and geographically. A few humans, particularly in Krondak, think that this dominance equates to racial superiority. Most reject this notion.

Ancient migrations of human tribes, reinforced by the development of nations, have led to the separation of humanity into several cultures. It is difficult to make hard boundaries between cultures. In broad strokes, people belonging to a culture share several attributes: a history, a language, mores, and physical characteristics.

Arguably, there are six major human cultures in Glorien. Each forms the majority of humans in a particular geographic region. Some are predominantly associated with a particular nation. Those are often referred to with the name of that nation.

Gwenish, also called Fae-touched
Origin: Gwenddon
Nations of cultural majority: Gwenddon, Fnorson, Loksenta, Ilgren
Nations with substantial cultural minority: None
Language: Gwenish. Traders, city dwellers, and nobility also speak Krondan. Fnorsons, in times past, often spoke dwarvish.
Mores: The Gwenish have a higher propensity towards magic than other cultures. The Gwenish in Gwenddon itself tend to be more isolationist than their cousins in Fnorson and Loksenta.
Physical characteristics: The Gwenish tend to be fair skinned and dark haired. Red hair is often thought to be a sign of recent fae ancestry.

Narfolk
Origin: Disputed. Most Narfolk think that Freiholm is their homeland. Many of the Krondakite elites think that the Narfolk come from a “lost” tribe from Krondak.
Nations of cultural majority: Freiholm, Narhus
Nations with substantial cultural minority: Gwenddon
Mores: The Narfolk pride themselves on their ability to survive in harsh environmental conditions. They reject centralized authority in favor of independent clans or communities.
Language: Narsh. Traders also speak Krondan. Those with family links to Gwenddon may speak some Gwenish.
Physical characteristics: In general, Narfolk are shorter and stockier than other cultures. They are pale skinned, usually with blonde - almost white - hair.

Krondakite
Origin: Krondak
Nations of cultural majority: Krondak, Five Nations
Nations with substantial cultural minority: Loksenta, Auriland, Fnorson
Mores: Krondakites are raised to believe that the Krondakite culture is the supreme culture for the supreme race. It is their duty to spread the benefits of their culture to all other nations by absorbing them into the Empire. Life in Krondak is very regimented. Everyone is assigned a job to do and is expected to do that job. Krondakites in the Five Nations are more cosmopolitan. After all, they seceded from Krondak to get away from much of this attitude The Five Nations still have a strong hierarchy and are very militaristic.
Language: Krondan. Few living in Krondak feel the need to learn anything else. Residents of the Five Nations often know some Aurlish.
Physical characteristics: Krondak spans Glorien from its north coast to its south. Northern Krondakites tend to be stout with dark or blonde hair. Southern Krondakites, including those of the Five Nations, then to be more slender, with darker skin and dark hair.

Khinga
Origin: Capivan (steppes)
Nations of cultural majority: Capivan
Nations with substantial cultural minority: South Turigil
Mores: Although most of the Capivana are classified culturally as Khinga, they are more tribal than any other culture. They have many subcultures, which can have significantly different mores from each other.
Language: The elites of Capivan speak an archaic version of Krondan. Everyone else speaks Khingan. Traders and diplomats speak modern Krondan.
Physical characteristics: Khinga tend to be stocky, with rounder faces than other cultures. Their skin color ranges from pale to dark. Their hair is almost always dark.

Mentans
Origin: Auriland
Nations of cultural majority: Auriland
Nations of substantial cultural minority: Capivan (North Auriland), Five Nations, Loksenta
Mores: Mentans tend to be cosmopolitan and peaceable. After all, their homeland is the crossroads of Glorien. They have gotten rich trading with their neighbors and facilitating trade. A common feeling amongst the Mentans is that whatever makes money is the right thing to do.
Language: Aurlish. Many also speak Krondan. Before the coming of the dragons, many also spoke dwarvish and dalibor.
Physical characteristics: Mentans generally have an olive complexion, with dark hair.

Troian
Origin: Troia
Nations of cultural majority: South Turigil
Nations of substantial cultural minority: Capivan (North Turigil)
Mores: The Troian culture originated on the continent of Troia. Many of the Troians make a strong effort to keep from being assimilated into one of the Glorien cultures. Few outsiders have been allowed to witness Troian rites and customs. It is known that the Troians are strongly family-oriented. Favors are as common a currency as notes and coins.
Physical characteristics: Troians have brown skin, usually a few shades darker than that of the Mentans. They have black hair, with both genders tending to wear it long.
