The original incarnation of the Companions of the Green Flame was created one evening in the bar of the Green Flame hotel in the Spires district of Freyk’s Wall. Gathered there were Lady Marjorie Silverman, her sister Lady Charlotte, her Academy classmates Kendra Arial and Aeinridi of the elven clan s’Navarre, and Kendra’s best friend Tasra d’Ameston. The quintet were celebrating Lady Marjorie’s impending graduation and achievement of the rank of Adept of Manipulation magic.
Inevitably, discussion turned to what Lady Marjorie would do after graduation. Her brother, Duke Randolph Silvermane, had been pressuring her to return to Evermeet. Adepts of any flavor were in great demand in Freyk’s Wall. Most adepts were not high-born nobles, however. No one would hire a Duke’s sister to dye clothes. Indeed, Lady Marjorie’s skill at alchemy and enthusiasm for research had convinced many of her tutors that she was destined to become a Master. More than one had pressured her to join the Academy.
Lady Marjorie, however, was bored. She craved excitement. So, she proposed that they form a mercenary company. Since she had been a girl, Charlotte - she forbade any of her friends from using her title - had been excellent at sneaking into places she should not have been. Kendra was already an accomplished seer whose own appointment as Adept was just a matter of time. Tasra was an expert at combat, both armed and unarmed. Aeinridi’s elemental magic would, quite literally, add firepower.
Thus the Companions of the Green Flame was born. Under Lady Marjorie’s leadership, the company only took “exciting” contracts. No bodyguard detail, no event security. The Green Flame hunted bandits and fought monsters. They were good at it. After a year, things were going well.
When things went bad, they went really bad. Goons from the Blue Knives criminal gang broke into Charlotte’s apartment, surprising her and Tasra as they slept. The Knives succeeded in abducting Charlotte. Tasra was gravely injured defending her. Lady Marjorie, Kendra, and Aeinridi managed to rescue Charlotte, but not soon enough. When they found her, she was close to being both physically and mentally broken. She had stolen a locket belonging to the lover of one of the Knives’ leaders. The Knives wanted it back. Charlotte broke under torture, telling the Knives where to find the locket. They were not satisfied and continued to abuse her.
Lady Marjorie took Charlotte back home to Evermeet to recover. Tasra was guilt-ridden over her failure to protect Charlotte. She quit the company and joined Loksenta’s Military Intelligence Service. Kendra and Aeinridi returned to their studies. Thus ended the Companions of the Green Flame.
At least, for a while. After Tasra’s stay in a Hokkai temple, she resumed monster hunting. Kendra had heard about her old friend passing through Freyk’s Wall. She tracked Tasra down in a town near Borsen’s Gap. She proposed getting the Green Flame back together. She and Aeinridi had graduated and gotten married. Neither was satisfied with the jobs available to adepts. Despite how it had ended, they both cherished the time they had spent as mercenaries. They could not go fully back to the way it had been. Lady Marjorie had acquiesced to Duke Randolph’s request she stay in Evermeet, bribed by the installation of a well-equipped alchemical laboratory in the Dower House. Kendra had lost track of Charlotte.
Despite her self-imposed exile from Freyk’s Wall, Tasra was lonely. She missed the company of the best friend she had ever had. She agreed. She suggested they round out the roster with Turbun Soriban, a tracker and archer that she had been working with.
The new Companions of the Green Flame took up where the original had left off. They proved even more able in their niche of fighting bandits and monsters. Along the way, a dwarf named Drasha Rockweaver joined the company. She rarely went into the field but kept the rest supplied with potions and weapons effective against some of the more unusual monsters that came out of Borsen’s Gap.
The resurrected Green Flame lasted somewhat longer than its predecessor. After a couple of years, Turbun decided to retire to a small farm a long way from Borsen’s Gap. The group carried on until Kendra became pregnant. The Companions of the Green Flame again ended.
This time, Tasra did not give up on being a part of a mercenary company. She took what she had earned as a Green Flame, plus a considerable amount gained through extracurricular activities as part of the MIS, and founded the d’Ameston Agency. Under Tasra’s leadership, and advised by Kendra and Aeinridi, the Agency grew to be one of the largest and most respected mercenary companies in Loksenta.
