The island of Gwenddon contains two separate but geographically overlapping nations, one human and one fae. Each nation can only be accessed from the other at certain times and in certain places. Fae influence had given the humans of Gwenddon a greater affinity for nature and certain types of magic than humans of other nations. For example, many Gwenish can speak with animals or plants. Many can also change partially or completely into animals. The received wisdom is that these powers come from interbreeding with the fae. The fact that Queen Llwna herself has lived far beyond a normal human lifespan is put forth as evidence. This theory is contradicted, however, by the fact that few Loksentans with Gwenish ancestry exhibit these traits.
This overview provides information on the human nation of Gwenddon.
Location: Off of the North coast of Krondak, between the Sea of Perryn and the Dark Sea.
Capital: Carenburh
Other notable towns and cities:
Newpira: Principal port. Located where the Sea of Perryn meets the Dark Sea.
Roypira: Historical seat of the monarchs of Gwenddon. Site of the Rock of Killbeagh, the strongest fortress in Gwenndon. Also the site of the Killbeagh Circle, a set of standing stones that mark a gateway to the capital of the fae country of Gwenddon.
Myrddney: Site of Calantrim, Gwenddon’s relatively modest school of magic
Government: Mixed monarchy
Head of state: Queen Llwna
Legislative body: Council of Nobles. The seven Dukes and Duchesses and thirteen minor nobles appointed by the monarch form the Council of Nobles. Theoretically, the Council’s main responsibility is to propose legislation and to advise the monarch. In reality, the fact that the responsibility for raising government revenue lies with the Gwenddon nobility, the Council has considerable actual power. The Council has even, very rarely, forced the monarch to withdraw edicts they have issued. The Council also has the responsibility for confirming a new monarch after the death of the reigning one. The Council exercised this power in 767 CR to raise King Llewlyn of Loksenta to the kingship of Gwenddon as well.
Economy: Primarily agricultural. Newpira is a trading hub for all of northern Glorien, as well as trade across the Sea of Perryn. Gold and silver is mined in the mountains near Roypira.
Effects of Harrying of the Dragons: Gwenddon suffered from few raids by flights of dragons.
Relations with other nations:
Fnorson and Loksenta: The royal families of both nations are descended from princes of Gwendded. All three nations retain close ties. Gwenddon and Fnorson have a mutual defense pact that will be activated when Krondak invades Fnorson. (Loksenta does not have a formal agreement with Fnorson, but it is the policy of Queen Beornwyn to support her cousin.)
Krondak: The Gwenish see Krondak as the main threat to peace in Glorien. The focus of Gwenddon’s foreign policy is to prevent Krondak aggression against Fnorson.
The rest of Glorien: Other than whatever interactions become necessary to contain Krondak, Gwenddon has little contact with other nations in Glorien.
