Introduction to Loksenta

Welcome to Loksenta. The nation of Loksenta and its capital city of Freyk’s Wall are the focal points of a homebrew fantasy setting for short stories, novels, and role playing game modules. Many of these stories feature Tasra d’Ameston and her d’Ameston Agency.

The world of Loksenta is a fantasy setting. It is not a Tolkienesque or pseudo-medieval high fantasy setting. Loksenta has undergone the magical equivalent of the Industrial Revolution. Loksenta has trains. It has skyscrapers. It has newspapers. Overall, Loksenta has the feel of America and Europe in the late 19th Century and early 20th Century.

The world of Loksenta is not a steampunk setting. The archetypical steampunk setting is a technologically but not socially advanced late 19th Century. Note that the key feature of steampunk is technology, divergent from our own world. This technology may seem like magic, but it is not magic. Steampunk airships are driven by steam engines. Loksenta airships are pulled by enslaved dragons. A steampunk heroine may fly using a jetpack. A Loksenta mage may fly by levitating a large, pillow-lined basket or, if she is old-fashioned, a broom. The difference between fantastic technology and magic may be subtle, but it greatly affects the ambiance of the stories.

The world of Loksenta is not a heroic fantasy setting. There are dragons, but no heroes with shining armor and a magic sword killing them single-handedly. There are no pig farmers who are secretly heirs to kingdoms. There are no quests to retrieve a powerful artifact to free a cursed princess. This world is much grittier. It is a world of noir-style mysteries. It is a world of heists. It is a world of spies and political intrigue. It is a grayscale world, not one of black and white.

The world of Loksenta is a world of magic. Most people, at least most humans, have a touch of magic, enough to light a small fire, change the color of cloth, or cure farm animals of minor ailments. Many have enough magical talent to become adepts. Adepts can energize the rails on which the trains run. Adepts can clean blocks of a city street with a single spell. Adepts can create hundreds of copies of a newpaper or book. Masters of magic can raise a skyscraper unassisted. Masters can control the elementals that move massive, ocean-going freighters. Masters can rip the soul from a living body. No one said that magic is always beneficial.

The world of Loksenta is a diverse world. The continent of Glorien, across the Sea of Perryn from Loksenta is populated by traditional fantasy humans, elves, and dwarves. It also hosts more unusual races, such as the gender-fluid Hroron’dir and the diminutive, mischievous Hulduvol. An ancient empire of Starntor lies to the North of Loksenta. To the South are hills populated by Hokkai, giant nomadic sheep herders. Much of the Loksenta’s continent is unexplored, so more exotic races might be discovered. A few minotaurs can be found in Freyk’s Wall. No one else knows where they come from, and they aren’t saying.
